Safety comes FIRSTSafety

New team members are required by the school to attend safety classes. It is a requirement of MCST that all students wishing to use any piece of equipment must take and pass the safety course.  Students will learn machine tool safety and general shop safety and receive a certificate at the end of the course.  Safety glasses MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHEN ON THE SHOP FLOOR OR NEAR MACHINES.  This means even if you are just watching progress!  Without the classes or the glasses you will not be permitted to build the robot!

Wear safety glasses!

Kaizen Safety Tips

Wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for your job.
Glasses, gloves, ear plugs, goggles, welding helmet, etc.Sanding

• Do not use equipment if you have not been trained and certified.

• Do not work alone. Have a teammate assist or be a watch person. Ask for help when you need it.
Welding

Keep your eyes on your task when using machinery or hand tools. Do not let others distract you.

• Do not wear loose or baggy clothes and keep long hair tied back to prevent entanglement in machinery.
Drilling

Keep the work area clean and organized. Prevent slip/trip hazards.

• Use a cart for moving the robot or other heavy items.

• Reduce cut hazards by eliminating sharp points and edges.

• Be aware of pinch hazards when working around belts, chains and other moving parts.

• Always turn off the power and release any stored energy (pneumatic, mechanical or electrical) before working on any components.

• Do not run. Horseplay is not allowed.
